The passage tables filling on a Saturday

Thursday's beginners' table seats four at the first assay. The house dealer explains a game from nothing, it lasts about an hour, it costs nothing, and most of the Friday regulars came through it.

The Saturday docket ladder is our nearest thing to a tournament and it is deliberately a poor one: an open chalked ladder, points only, and a round of tea or something colder for the table on top. No entry, no prize money, nothing to bank.

Sunday is the roast and the early close. Two assays, both tables and dining room quiet, and the lights up at ten whether anyone likes it or not.
